BHenry Latrobe Furveyor of the public buildings April 1803." "The 3 stories of the South Wing as built after original [...], of the Thornton plan were removed, foundations & all" "These dimenxions [sic] are not exactly as expected 121 feet 6 inches." "By an egregious blunder in the erection of the North Wing, the Center of the West front does not coincide with that of the East.This error being necefsairly transplanted into the South wing for the Sake of Symmetry [...], it follows that the Center line, beginning in the Center of the East front which is correctly built cannot pafs through the building.It must end at [...] to which point it runs parallel to the south front & regulates all the Walls.The center line towards from thence must be drawn square with the West front, & regulate the Walls westward.The error is 8 and 3/4 inches."
