Summary: An advertising lithograph from 1891 for the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey. The print features a frolicsome female enticing an old man with a glass of beer. Draped in front of the table is an illustration of the Krueger Brewery. Looking on is a group of gnomes amid hop vines and barley stalks, representing two of the main ingredients in beer. At bottom is a calendar for the year 1891. Originally, this spot would have contained a calendar pad with tear-away sheets for each month. At lower right, in very small lettering, is the name of the lithographer: "H. Schile & Sons, 295 Bowery, N.Y."

Notes: The Krueger Brewery was a cherished institution in Newark, New Jersy and enjoyed a long history there. A young Gottfried Krueger came from his native Germany in 1856 and worked at his uncle's Newark brewery. In 1865, Krueger purchased the brewery with a partner. When the partner died ten years later, Gottfried Krueger became the brewery's sole owner. During National Prohibition (1920-1933), the brewery produced non-alcoholic beverages. In 1933, upon the Repeal of Prohibition, the Krueger brewery returned to the production of beer. By 1952, the Newark brewery was producing about 1 million barrels of beer per year. But, as the 1950s wore on, it became increasingly difficult for regional brewers like Krueger to compete. The brewery finally closed in 1961.
